If you are thinking of buying a new flat screen television, why not have a look at the new LED televisions that are quickly catching up in sales with LCD and plasma. LED televisions use a new type of technology to backlight the screen. In reality LED televisions use the same pixel configuration as an LCD television. But where LCD televisions use fluorescent light to backlight the screen LED televisions use LEDs to backlight the screen.
You might see some LED televisions labelled as ‘Edge Lit’. These LED televisions use LEDs placed around the outer edges of the screen which then beam light across the back of the screen. One of the main advantages of using this type of lighting is that screens can be made exceptionally thin. However the edges of the screen may appear slightly brighter than the centre of the screen.
The other type of LED backlighting is known as ‘Full Array’ lighting. Here many rows of LEDs are placed behind the screen so the entire surface is illuminated. This method gives more control over brightness and darkness levels but the television thickness does increase.
In reality LED televisions should actually be called LED lit LCD televisions.
