How can you find out where to mount your ceiling TV bracket?

In the last article we praised the benefits of ceiling TV brackets. But we didn’t mention ways to fix them to the ceiling. Most people know that if they have brick walls then fitting a standard wall mount can be quite easy as the brick wall will easily be able to support the weight of the TV bracket and the TV. However, your ceiling is a different matter altogether.

A ceiling usually has a plaster surface that will be both lath and plaster or plaster boards fitted over the wooden joists. These joists are in effect what are holding your ceiling up. If you fix the bracket to just the plaster it will not be able to support the weight of the television. What you need to do, is fix the bracket to a joist. But how can you locate the joist if it is under the plaster surface?

You can use a great device called a stud finder to locate either the studs in a wall or the joists in the ceiling. When you pass the finder over the area, when the joist is located, it will give an audible signal. This way you will be able to securely fix your ceiling TV bracket to the joist and hence not worry about the TV being damaged.
