The Oscars 2014: The Race for Best Picture

Category: News,TV Brackets — December 2nd, 2013

The 2014 Oscars are 3 months away however the race for the prestigious Best Picture Award is already heating up, with several front-runners already emerging in this specific field. These awards the biggest in the film industry and a nomination is a fantastic achievement for a director, an actor, composer or anyone else involved in the movie-making process.

2013 has already been an amazing year for film enthusiasts, but December promises even more fantastic films that are due to be released just in time to be considered for Academy Award Nominations such as; ‘the Hobbit – Desolation of Smaug’, ‘Nebraska’, and ‘Frozen’.

According to Oscar experts it looks likes two outstanding films of 2013 are guaranteed a nomination for the Best Picture Award and those films are:

‘Gravity’:  Alfonso Cuaron’s entirely unique, 3D film about astronauts adrift in space starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. This film did extremely well at the box office in regards to sales. The outstanding visual qualities of this film stand it in good stead for a win let alone a nomination in comparison to other films released in 2013.

‘12 Years a Slave’: A historical drama about the brutality of the American slave trade by renowned director Steve McQueen. This film has exceptional emotional qualities and is unapologetically truthful in regards to such a challenging subject matter.

The Oscars 2014 promise not to break the ongoing trend of pitting 2 films against each other; one visually brilliant and the other historical/emotionally challenging. Last year we saw ‘Life of Pi’ go head to head with ‘Argo’; it is this type of rivalry between phenomenal motion pictures is what makes the Oscars so incredibly exciting – it is impossible to predict a victor. Prior to this we saw ‘Avatar’ Vs ‘the Hurt Locker’ and ‘Hugo’ Vs ‘the Artist’ – the last three years has seen the historical/ emotional challenging option become the victor, therefore it will be thoroughly interesting to see if this trend continues or if ‘Gravity’ will emerge on top.
