If you keep up to date with the latest technology news you may have come across people talking about YouView. But what is it, and how will it change the way you watch television?

The best way to describe the new set top box which will be available in the early part of 2012 is to say it is as simple to use and watch as Freeview. But with this device you get access to video on demand and catch-up TV services across the internet.

Through your flat panel TV you will be able to enjoy the same digital content, but also be able to benefit from such things as the ITV Player, 4oD, Demand 5 and BBC iPlayer. These services will all be able to be accessed through your television as long as it is connected to a YouView Box.

For those wondering about the changes this will bring to their TV viewing experience, YouView will allow people to watch programmes they thought they had missed and use their TV guide to see things which have already been shown. You won’t have to miss your favourite shows ever again.

The box will also act as a digital video recorder with the ability to record, pause and rewind live TV depending on your preferences.

The content you watch can be viewed in high definition and gives you so much more choice when it comes to TV viewing. Just install your TV on the wall using TV brackets and the YouView Box can be fitted just below it, so you can keep everything looking tidy.

In the last article we explained how the demand for ‘smart’ televisions is quite low at the moment and this fact is backed up by a recent YouGov survey. They found that consumers are still quite happy to access the web using their Xbox or PlayStation games console instead of looking to buy a TV with these facilities built in.

The takeup of connected TV may be set to grow next year due to the fact that there are plenty more services to be added to what it already there. For a start, YouView set top boxes will be out. This TV and broadband box is already backed by the major broadcasters like ITV, BBC and Channel 5 as well as TalkTalk and BT.

According to YouGov, one in ten already have a connected television, but the figure is set to rise during 2012 because of YouView, plus the fact that Netflix are about to launch a new service and there are some big sporting events taking place next year.

With the London Olympics and Euro 2012 being shown live across the internet, this will only boost the demand for Smart TVs. However, manufacturers have been warmed that they need to think about what the customer wants as its main priority.

The media consulting director at YouGov, Dan Brilot, said:

“Smart content producers must continue to develop their services to make it increasingly easier for people to watch what they want, when they want, wherever they want.”

If you do decide to go for one of these connected TVs next year, don’t forget that you’ll still need to buy TV brackets if you want to position it up on the wall where it can be enjoyed to the full.

Research by YouGov has revealed that internet connected TV sets offering integrated services have not really taken off yet, with current levels of demand said to be “very low”.

Even though they provide users with the opportunity to access such websites as YouTube and the BBC iPlayer feature, at the moment only 15 per cent of consumers questioned by the agency said that a connected or ‘smart’ TV is on their 2012 shopping lists.

This is not good news for manufacturers like LG and Samsung, although it is still early days for the technology. It is all about finding out what the customer wants to get from their TV viewing experience and it would seem like there is not enough to entice people towards this at the moment.

Next year this could all change however as Apple are set to release their own TV content, Google TV will be here, plus with Netflix and YouView also in the offing, this may tip the scales towards this new medium.

This survey looked at what tech products people expected to buy over the next year, including tablet computers and connected TVs. They did note that this service is still growing and that although consumers still prefer to connect their TV to the internet using external hardware such as games consoles at the moment, the outlook may be different again within a few months.

It is good to know that TV wall brackets are still extremely popular as they can be used to position a flat panel TV onto the wall, whether it has ‘smart’ capabilities or not.

With the introduction of smaller and more mobile devices with which a person can choose to watch television on, you’d be forgiven for wondering what the future is for conventional TV viewing.

However, there is certainly no need to get too over excited about the demise of the television just yet as these tablet PCs, smartphones and other modern innovations are not about to replace our LCD and plasma TVs.

The majority of people still enjoy watching their favourite programmes on their full size TV as it gives them an unparalleled experience. While it can be handy to catch up on some entertainment while on the go, such as whiling away a train journey or flight, but this scenario is only a limited solution.

Most TV viewers prefer to see the picture on a large television mounted on TV wall brackets because this is so much more comfortable, there is no need to strain to see the screen and you get the perfect view from your armchair.

It is certainly very easy to see why viewers have no plans to abandon these devices when they have the possibility of watching it on the big screen instead.

Despite the increased popularity of watching TV content on tablets, there is no real challenge to the conventional television as long as the home cinema setup continues to offer people exactly what they need. It would certainly need something special in this regard to pose as a threat to the TV, perfectly positioned in the living room or bedroom.

Sky Anytime was previously a service you could only access through having a Sky TV subscription, but Virgin Media have announced that it will soon be offered through cable as well. So if you have a TV package with Virgin Media, you could have even more choice when it comes to on-demand programmes.

These days most people can’t be bothered with TV schedules and having to be in to watch the content they want to see at the times it is actually shown. This is certainly not convenient, so this looks like a smart move by the cable operator as these services are highly thought of.

Unless you had a digital video recorder, watching programmes as and when you like was not always a possibility until recently. With Sky and Virgin Media providing on-demand programming options, customers can be more picky with the shows they watch.

Although Virgin Media already offers some of these services already, the fact that Sky Anytime will increase the output available, this can only be seen as a good thing.

Viewers will soon be able to access this additional entertainment from their flat screen TVs mounted on the wall by TV brackets. This gives them the chance to watch the TV as it was made to be watched, taking pride of place in the living room.

This Virgin Media service will give its customers the chance to watch TV programmes usually only available to those with Sky, so it provides a wider selection for them to consider.

If you are planning on starting 2012 with some renovations to your property, then you might be thinking of redesigning your living room. As you go through your house you will have to make a checklist of the sort of changes you would like to make.

This is a great time for sorting out your home cinema set up as unless you go for a complete overhaul it can be easier to just leave things as they are. But as you are decorating the room differently in any case, you might as well go the whole hog and ensure your TV viewing experience is at its best.

To do this you really need to consider getting TV wall brackets as these handy devices can support your TV at height, meaning there is no longer any need for the table to position it on. You can design the room with more space as this is taken out of the equation.

You might even wish to mount the other hardware too – with your Sky box or Blu-ray disc player fixed to the wall using a wall bracket, freeing up even more room which can be used for whatever you like.

So, if you are planning on changing the entire layout of the living room anyway, why not make the most effective use of the space you have to work with and make room for the TV on the wall. This can really transform a room and make it much neater and tidier at the same time.

The Radio Times website www.radiotimes.com has recently conducted an online poll to determine which title gets the ultimate accolade of being the nation’s favourite festive movie.

Unsurprisingly ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ came out tops in the survey, with this heart-warming tale taking 18 per cent of the 3,000 votes. Second place belonged to The Muppet Christmas Carol (10 per cent).

The British rom-com Love Actually made it into third on the most popular Christmas film list.

People chose from 50 movies set on or around Christmas with most of the ones you would expect to be there gaining recognition. However, there were a few surprises in store with Die Hard coming in to take the eighth spot. While it is not immediately thought of as a Christmas film, more of an action movie, it is set on Christmas Eve.

Film editor at the Radio Times, Andrew Collins, was rather delighted with the results of the poll when he said:

“As it is the season to be jolly, I won’t disguise my rosy-cheeked joy that the poll named Die Hard one of the top 10 Christmas movies of all time.

“It’s just as capable of producing festive tingles as the more traditional, December-released Muppet Christmas Carol or the cocklewarming Love Actually, which was literally giftwrapped in 2003 with a lovely red ribbon tied around its twinkling poster image.”

This year you can expect all of the top 10 to appear on satellite and cable TV, if not on Freeview, so you can settle back and watch these classics on your flat screen TV mounted on TV brackets.

Simon Cowell, creator of the X Factor TV series, always likes his winning acts to be in with a chance of taking the top spot at Christmas. While Matt Cardle might have taken the prize last year with his rendition of Biffy Clyro’s “When We Collide”, but it looks like he is to be disappointed again this year.

The 52-year-old TV mogul has already conceded that this year’s X Factor winners Little Mix are likely to miss out to Gareth Malone’s Military Wives when the Christmas No.1 is announced on a special BBC1 Top of the Pops episode at 2pm on Christmas Day.

In 2009, following a campaign by angry Facebook users, “Killing In The Name”, a Rage Against The Machine classic, was able to beat the X Factor to the top spot and inn turn preventing the show from winning for the fifth year in a row.

Simon Cowell used his twitter account to say: ‘Congrats to Little Mix & congrats to Military Wives. It’s a great cause & a worthy Christmas No.1.’

If you are tuning in to Top of the Pops on Christmas Day, you will be pleased to know that the likely winner this year is certainly for a good cause. Forces’ charities will benefit from the sale of the single “Wherever You Are”, so it is no surprise to see bookmakers are stopping taking bets on this year’s winner.

It is good to know that the hit music show is back again this Christmas. Many people will be sat back, full after their big turkey dinner, watching the programme on their flat screen TVs mounted on TV brackets.

A TV bracket may not look much but this device can really ensure an amazing viewing experience when watching television. At Christmas time when there are so many good TV programmes to watch, this accessory can really increase the enjoyment factor.

It is a sad fact that these wall mounts are often underrated, due to the fact they are not technological gadgets that produce top quality picture or sound, but without them you’d certainly miss out. When you place a television on a table or stand you often find the screen is at the wrong height and is not ideal for the place where you are seated.

With adjustable TV brackets you can swivel and tilt the display until you get the desired effect and point the screen in the most suitable direction to where your seating is arranged.

When you are settling down to watch the best of Christmas entertainment this is all very important. If you have booked time off work to relax and enjoy some top quality TV, this can make all the difference. While it may not be the most energetic pursuit in the world, at this time in the annual calendar it is perfectly acceptable to catch up on our favourite shows and watch Christmas movies we’ve always loved since we were little.

Everyone is allowed a little indulgence at Christmas, so get your TV set up correctly using the recommended TV brackets and get ready for some high quality entertainment in front of the box.
